Alexander Skarsgård in Melancholia

sanctoerico:

I just saw the latest Lars Von Trier and I am still recovering from one of the most powerful cinematic experience I’ve had in years. Melancholia is a visually stunning and emotionally compelling apocalyptic fable.

The ensemble cast is uniformly excellent, but Alexander Skarsgard’s performance as Michael, the gentle, self-effacing new husband of the emotionally unstable Justine (Kirsten Dunst, who gives the finest performance of her career) is a stand-out.

Michael’s love and devotion for Justine is utterly palpable; it is imbued in his every look and gesture, and Alexander’s on-screen chemistry with Kirsten is quite simply a thing of beauty. Michael is the ‘heart’ of the movie, in the sense that his guilelessness, sweetness and optimism are the antithesis to the cynicism, greediness and fatalism of those who surround him.

I will detail his storyline below. Please be aware this will be spoiler heavy.
